Degree in Biologic Sciences, University of Trieste, 2003. Title of the graduation thesis: “Trace metal biomonitoring in water-courses by the use of moss bags”. The suitability of moss bags (transplanted bryophytes) was tested in four different types of fresh-waters (stream, river, irrigation ditch, effluents from sewage purifiers). Moss bags were able to detect and characterise in space and time both chronic and intermittent events of pollution, even under extreme environmental conditions. Research activities were supported by the Agency for Environmental Protection of the Veneto Region (A.R.P.A.V.) and the Province of Vicenza. Qualification to practice the profession of Biologist (2004). Ph.D.
in Biomonitoring methodologies for the study of environment alterations,
University of Trieste - Department of Life Sciences, 2008. Title of the
thesis: “Trace element biomonitoring in the water-courses of the Province of
Vicenza by the use of moss bags: methodological aspects and application”.
The methodological aspects of the study consist in a review of the existing
guidelines for the use, treatment and analysis of bryophytes, written by
international experts and re-adapted by the Vicenza Moss Bags working group.
The selected methods were then applied to study the influence of some
chemical factors on trace element uptake: about 200 experiments were carried
out under laboratory conditions within a special aquarium. Finally, the moss
bag technique was applied to measure the background concentrations of 13
trace elements in 7 water-courses of the Province of Vicenza. An
environmental alteration index (Palladio) was finally defined. Research
activities were supported by the Province of Vicenza, the Agency for
Environmental Protection of the Veneto Region and the Water-basin
Authorities of Bacchiglione and Brenta.
